What is a Jewish Hat?

A Jewish hat is also known as a Kipa or skull cap and can come in a variety of different designs, materials, sizes and can be purchased for a variety of prices. This Jewish hat, the Kipa, is usually made from cloth in a circular or platter shaped way is worn by Orthodox Jewish men in order for them to fulfill the Jewish law that the Talmud states, “Cover your head in order that the fear of heaven may be upon you” during times of prayer. In some parts of the conservative and reform Jewish communities this Jewish hat is also worn by women during prayer.

The reason to wear Jewish Hat

Before now the wearing of a Jewish hat was also apparent during times of custom which then separated those who were Jewish from those who were not and, although to some extent this remains true, it is now considered as an act of Kiddush Hashem allowing Jewish men and boys to honor God and within that ruling it has been described that no man should walk more than two meters outside without wearing one. The more recent decisions on the wearing of a Jewish hat is that both men and boys should wear one while they eat, study, pray, while in a synagogue and also when engaging in a ritual act.

Versions of Jewish Hat

There are lots of other different versions as to when and where to wear a Jewish hat within different factions of the Jewish faith and as the centuries have passed down this meaning has also changed. The color and fabric chosen to make the hat also means different things to different people and often sends a message to others of the Jewish faith what part of the Jewish community they belong to. A crocheted Jewish hat is mainly worn by those of the religious Zionism, some Modern Orthodox, and certain Conservative Judaism members and also by some of those from the Reform Judaism faith.
